What is an Embedded Network?

What are Embedded Networks?

An embedded network involves the installation of a bulk or parent meter upstream of all individual meters. This allows one bulk electricity contract to supply the entire site. An embedded network enables many small customers to become a large market customer and buy bulk electricity at a lower cost. They are common in residential estates, apartment buildings, shopping centre complexes, and retirement villages.

Embedded networks can reduce site electricity costs by as much 50%. They lower electricity costs by:

  • Reducing fixed and metering charges by consolidating to one supply point

  • Changing the site classification to access a more cost-effective tariff structure

  • Lowering energy charges due to high volume purchases

Frequently Asked Questions

How are the bulk costs fairly distributed and will I be subsidising higher energy users?

  • Humenergy Group provides a utility billing service that replicates the normal process based on meter reads so tenants/owners only pay for electricity based on their own consumption.

  • We also have a help desk for any account queries.

Do the existing individual electricity meters have to be changed:

  • No, electricity meter ownership is transferred from the network to the owning/controlling company or body corporate for the site

  • The existing meters are read and billed by Humenergy Group

Is solar a problem?

  • No, existing solar within the network offsets bulk electricity or new solar can be added.

  • Existing solar owners can be paid a feed-in tariff that is generally higher than what they would get otherwise.

Does it affect electricity reliability?

  • There is no change to the reliability of electricity supply because the existing infrastructure is not changed.

  • In fact, reliability can be cost-effectively increased by the addition of embedded generators.

What about if a small percentage of people object or have existing electricity contracts?

  • The Power of Choice legislation planned to come into force in December 2017 will allow individuals to leave the embedded network if they wish.

  • Therefore, it is possible to proceed without 100% buy-in.

  • Those that stay out can organise their own retailer, embedded network operators have the right to charge a fee to these people for their share of the network costs. (In such a scenario, Humenergy can organise and manage any corrections required with the retailers).
